AORN Leadership Specialty Assembly

Management Monday

Posted 6 days ago by Jennifer Parrott

Happy Monday!! Let's get this week started and off on the right foot!

Culture of Safety is such a HUGE topic in healthcare. But what is it?

Culture of safety refers to an environment in which safety is a fundamental priority for everyone—leaders, clinicians, and staff—and where every team member feels empowered to speak up about risks, errors, or near misses without fear of blame or retaliation. Key aspects include:

- Open Communication

- Learning from Mistakes

- Leadership Committee

-Teamwork Collaboration

- Continuous Improvement

How can perioperative leaders create a work environment that balances productivity with a strong culture of safety and team engagement?

Let's get this discussion going... I would love to hear everyone's responses!

Jennifer you ask a great question, balancing those with responsibility and accountability can really be daunting. We want to encourage everyone to be open about the issue and contribute. We also have a personal responsibility to accountable to our standard of care. It is a hard thing to report anything that may implicate yourself or others. We have to support our employees to be able to speak out and not fear any negative impacts. But we must hold ourselves accountable no matter the consequences to do the right thing.

I believe in the beginning of every shift it’s great to have great communication a five minute huddle open mic anyone can speak regarding any topic or situation. They had the prior day or any concerns for the day going forward also stretching is key to preventing work related injuries stretching as a group I feel makes communication amon staff better and joyful .

Kenny, you are absolutely correct! It is imperative to have a nonpunitive reporting system. All staff should be empowered to speak up without fear of punishment or repercussions.
Remember our Nursing Code of Ethics... Do no harm. We are our patients' advocates.

Natalie, I love this idea. It gives you time to organize your thoughts and bring any concerns or questions to everyone's attention. Thank you for sharing!!
